Maths
At Northdown Primary School, our goal is for every child to enjoy mathematics and develop into confident problem solvers. To achieve this, we use the Mathematics Mastery programme, which fosters a deep understanding of core mathematical concepts and equips pupils to apply their knowledge across various contexts.
We chose Mathematics Mastery because:
- It is EEF-approved, aligning with evidence-based best practices.
- It brings the most effective teaching strategies into our classrooms.
- It provides robust support for teacher confidence and allows new staff to integrate seamlessly.
- It enables collaboration between our Maths Lead and others within TKAT, fostering continual improvement and shared expertise.
Mathematics Mastery is built on the belief that all children can succeed in maths. Its mission is to empower teachers to deliver engaging, effective lessons that help all pupils thrive.
The programme focuses on developing pupils’ conceptual understanding, language and communication, and mathematical thinking in every lesson, enabling them to become proficient problem solvers.
Each lesson incorporates opportunities for children to:
- Solve problems using concrete, pictorial, and abstract methods.
- Engage in mathematical discussions, using precise vocabulary to explain and justify their reasoning.
- Organise, compare, identify patterns, and generalise mathematical ideas.
Regular Maths Meetings reinforce learning by revisiting key concepts, helping children to activate prior knowledge and retain what they’ve learned.
This curriculum spans from Early Years to the end of Key Stage 2, ensuring a consistent and comprehensive mathematical foundation for all pupils.
We are also pleased to provide children with access to Times Tables Rock Stars at Northdown. This is a great resource in which children can practise their times tables to improve their knowledge, speed and recall of multiplication and division facts. Children strive to beat their own speed and points as well as compete against other children, classes and schools.
