At Northdown Primary School, we foster a culture of respect for ourselves and those around us. Our goal is to help every child develop a strong understanding of themselves, their peers and the broader community while learning to navigate and respond to a wide range of emotions.

We are proud to serve a diverse school community, representing a range of social and economic backgrounds. This diversity enriches our school, and we embrace our responsibility to promote the values of respect, inclusion, and community. We actively prepare our pupils to become responsible citizens, grounded in British Values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. These values are integrated into every aspect of school life, including our PSHE curriculum, assemblies and theme days.

Recognizing that emotional well-being is fundamental to academic success, we prioritize mental and physical health, offering consistent support to help children thrive. Through our focus on resilience and a growth mindset, we empower children to overcome challenges and strive for excellence in all areas of learning. Our comprehensive PSHE curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to lead safe, healthy, and independent lives, both now and in the future.

PSHE at Northdown Primary School

We use the Jigsaw PSHE programme, which is rooted in mindfulness principles and practices. Each lesson is structured into six parts to support holistic development:

  • Connect Us: Enhancing social skills for effective collaboration.
  • Calm Me: Preparing for learning by relaxing the body and calming the mind.
  • Open My Mind: Focusing attention on specific learning intentions.
  • Tell Me or Show Me: Introducing new learning concepts.
  • Let Me Learn: Reinforcing learning through engaging activities.
  • Help Me Reflect: Encouraging self-reflection and personal growth.

This approach ensures that PSHE at Northdown not only teaches life skills but also nurtures children’s emotional and social well-being, preparing them for success both in school and beyond.
